when did this start exactly? what did the artist even get this from? or did they just pull it out of thin air?

it all started when some of the fans spotted a wall-eyed gray pony in the background across a few episodes. What started as an error and then a sustained but quiet joke eventually became a fan movement, and even became acknowledged by the artists. Now Derpy Hooves is kind of an 'ascended extra' of the series. She has no talking parts except one (she says "Muffins!" once) but has been a persistent presence in the show, usually hidden in the background of every episode. She is the only pony with her distinctive crazy-pointing eyes.

This image makes her look badass by putting an eyepatch over one of them, and thus allowing her to focus from one of them.

She has a rather strong fan-following.

in Episode 4 of Season 2 she had a large percentage of the screen for a funny part.

  • The Grey Mare! I still think it's kind of crappy, very unlikely that the mortar would have come that close. The walls of the valley were supposed to prevent that. Still, it gave the infantry one hell of a morale boost, thanks in no small part to Lyra and Bon Bon.
