  • Wait, so he doesn't even want to be supreme ruler of wherever we are? And from this dialogue, they're already in a committed relationship and have gotten physical? Again, I feel like I've missed out on a lot of vitally important lore.

I've been reading it as it got posted here (there's actually a section of explaining that is missing from e6, which actually answers a few of my questions) and while I like the concept, I find the whole thing a bit too...rushed.

    Gareth's review of Sombrashy

Okay, so according to the backstory we're given, Sombra reconstituted through his horn in a weakened state, so Celestia tasked Fluttershy with reforming him like she did Discord. She only does this because the alternative is killing him, so one would expect a Beauty and the Beast dynamic: she's forced to find the good in a despotic ruler, and out of that struggle love blossoms. Tale as old as time, true as it can be.
My problem with it is that we only join the story once that's all been resolved. He's reformed, she's in love with him, and they've won a fabulous absolute monarchy over the Ceydenian Empire, which just happened to have their former ruler die and absolutely no one else was qualified or wanted to rule in his place. It just seems way too neat and tidy, and I feel like we missed out on the actual story.
Also, a huge consequence of starting where we do without the characters being developed to that point makes it seem like Fluttershy is still a hostage and Sombra is still a despot. She's been royally commanded to abandon her home, her friends, and all of the animals under her care in order to keep Sombra from falling back into his old empire-enslaving ways, and she doesn't seem in any way happy with a marriage she's being forced into. And I'll just say it: Sombra behaves like an absolute dick to her. You could say that there's something she sees in him beneath the surface, but because we skipped his reformation and their courtship, we have no idea what that is.
The blog is by no means terrible, and the art is just beautiful, but I feel like the pairing needs to be earned, not taken as a given. I'd say the story could benefit greatly from flashbacks to various important points of their budding relationship, without having to go through the whole thing. Maybe even going deeper into Sombra's life before the Crystal Empire, which might help flesh out his identity and provide an emotional anchor which Fluttershy could use to reach out to him. There's a lot of possibilities for this story, and I'd love it if we could dig a little deeper.
