Johto's old Safari zone had a small desert area before the war. The destruction of the surrounding zones when Cainwood city was nuked had allowed the desert to expand.
As with most deserts, it is important to be prepared for traversing or even skirting their edges. Hydration is quite important as is dressing appropriately. But if you are Refuge Dweller that is relatively new to the whole living on the surface thing... Well, even an irradiated pool of water will seem tolerable as long as it provides relief from the heat.
Just cross your fingers that you don't come out of the water with a new mutation or a parasite problem.
