I like O'possum gals...that's the short summary of this.

The long summary is that in our Dungeons and Dragons campaign, once again Rowan has been forced to cross paths with the mistake hanging over his head that was sleeping with Miss Margaret Farrowfaighle. She's on her way to Vega to meet with members of Odran's family, on the exact same ship the group is on. Oh joy!

Miss Rusoe came about because after the session I started thinking back to Rowan's troubled period away from Dolly, and how it would be funny to make the problem worse by having more women with Bastard Howell's show up. Initially, I had planned for Rowan's arc in terms of running away from Dolly so she could have a better life, and trying to forget her through booze and one-night stands to last for a longer stretch of the campaign. This was so other characters could kind of piece the situation together, and help Rowan confront the fact that there's a Dolly-shaped hole in his heart. As Rowan would tell Dolly later when he admitted to his year-long emotional bender, "They weren't you."

So now I'm experimenting with exploring the worst of it in backstory, retroactively due to not being able to do it live. And thus the tentative concept for Miss Rusoe was born. Initially starting out as a more demure, shy raccoon lady, somehow she turned into a rough and tumble creole tomboy coal shoveler for steam engines. I figure at some point, shortly after leaving Dolly, Rowan was on a long train ride on his way out for a long-distance case when a murder on the train drops a fresh case in his lap. During his interrogation with the flirty coal worker, the pair are trapped in hot coal car by whoever the real murderer is. They also sabotaged much of the methods airing out the hotbox, presumably hoping to asphyxiate the duo. Mattie of course, knows other ways to flush out the building carbon dioxide, but it does little deal with the heat levels which forces the pair down to undergarments as they wait for rescue. One thing leads to another and the rest of their nightlong wait is spent knocking boots. At least that's the tentative idea. I'm not sure I'd canonize this...but she was still fun to make.

Marissa Rusoe would be her little pouch puppy Rowan left her without knowing. A half-wolf half-opossum gremlin of a girl who's inherited her mother's rambunctious fire even if she's just a little over a year old. She likes to explore and climb on everything, and is super inquisitive.
Regardless of wether I go with this idea, Miss Rusoe will get used in the future. Believe me.
