    It could be considered transphobic for asking it to a real person but that's beside the point.

    That's what a headcanon is all about: it's a what if from the author of the fan art.

    Coming from a trans person, the question isn't inherently transphobic, so long as the context is apporpriate. A close friend who is comfortable discussing such topics, no problem, ask if you have questions. A stranger you just met however, that's none of your business and how dare you for asking.

    That said, regarding art of a fictional character, so long as your tone is curious and non-hostile, there's nor reason for any rational person to be offended.
