Description

A continuation of my ongoing design side project based on various cults channeling the powers of totemic beasts through worn masks, transforming into hybrid forms that typically embody anthropomorphism and gijinka aspects.

[Alt text from social media] A lone Apicultist Worker looking wistfully towards the viewer. They are an insectile masked monstergirl with a lower torso and abdomen comprised of a transparent, honey-like substance, surrounded by a loose, draping fabric and two sets of partial legs that grip the sides of the abdomen. A segmented tail wraps around the back of the abdomen, cupping the base and containing honey drippings within the tails stinger. Her upper torso is wrapped in fur, from which emerges four arms. The arms in front are yellow and bulging with the same honey substance, while the rear arms appear almost black and skeletal; one is hidden behind the torso while another holds a fencer's épée at the edge of frame. Her head is covered in a large, segmented yellow mask with two large red lenses covering her large eyes, still vaguely visible within.

(hastily written) lore below, contains aspects of identity erasure, engulfment, force-feeding and being subsumed by a collective hivemind:

The bee-like Apicultists are a cult feared and estranged by even other Veiled Cults, belonging to a collective hivemind that has been stripped of their individuality in service of the growth of their communities. Enclaves are clearly defined and fiercely guarded by Apiculture workers within the hearts of large jungles, consisting of impossibly massive honeycomb structures surrounded by lush vegetation and flora that has been hand-pollinated by the Cult. Those who would wander too close to a thriving Enclave are quickly incapacitated by Apiculture workers, either by their deceptively nimble swordplay or by the powerful honey-like sedative that forms their abdomen and can be injected via their stinger. These captives are then engulfed by the Apicultist's abdomen and dragged further into the hive, where their captor bestows a totemic veil unto their prey before beginning the arduous process of shaping them into a new productive member of the Apiculture.

Over the next several weeks, the Apicultist force-feeds their protégé the toxic honey from their abdomen, causing their DNA to break down as the totemic veil's magic begins to re-shape them. During this time, their captor takes on a role as a maternal guardian, ensuring the Apicultist-to-bee is safe, well-fed, and properly sedated at all times. The "mother" will often spend entire days messaging molting flesh from the pupating Apicultist as their thoughts are gradually supplanted by the droning will of the Apiculture through both their totemic veil and their host's parasitic bond. During this time, the mother will fight to the death to protect their "child", ensuring the transformation and their synchronization with the hivemind is not interrupted.

If the process is successful, a new Apicultist is born, heeding the hive's directives to protect, pollinate, and proliferate. If the transformation is interrupted late in the process, typically through the death of the host, the residual magic and honey within her system will typically force the Apicultist to finish her metamorphosis over the following days in an incredibly painful process, leaving her both cut off from the hive mind and from any memory of her past self. These rogue Apicultists will often heed the call of their lingering totemic instinct and go on to start their own Apicultures, creating a new hive mind from their own mental template; although some have been known to regain some semblance of their individuality if they are assisted in fighting their instincts. In either case, a host Apicultist that has reared a young will enter the next stage of their life cycle, drastically reducing honey production and becoming a deadly Apicultist Soldier as their wings grow in and speed and musculature increase. Soldiers will typically shadow their children and assist them with their new duties for a few weeks before the Hivemind calls them to a new vocation, leaving the new Apicultist worker to the Hivemind's directive.
